HR consultant Renske: 'This really is my dream job'

Although she has not been working at Ballast Nedam for very long, she is already 100 per cent sure that she is right where she wants to be. Renske Tjoelker has been HR adviser at Ballast Nedam Materieel since 1 December 2021.

A challenging position with a lot of freedom - exactly what Renske was looking for.

Why did you apply to Ballast Nedam?

"After studying Human Resources & Labour at university, I worked as an HR consultant at logistics companies for ten years. Then I was an independent coach and trainer for more than 12 years. But then corona came along and assignments declined. I went to work temporarily at the GGD. And although I always said I never wanted to be employed again, I noticed that I had actually missed working in a team a lot. So when I saw a vacancy at Ballast Nedam, I applied immediately."

Was that a good decision?

"Yes, absolutely. I think the construction industry is really cool. Very direct, practical and fast. And I find my job incredibly fun and varied. For instance, as HR adviser I am also part of the Ballast Nedam Materieel management team. It's great that everyone takes HR seriously and sees me as a valuable sparring partner."

What does your working day look like?

"Once every two weeks I spend a day at the Maarssen branch and once a quarter in Sittard. But I mainly work in Almere. There I have my own office where anyone can always walk in with questions. I also support managers and conduct job application and exit interviews. I am also working on improving the assessment cycle and reducing sick leave. My goal is for employees to feel even more at home in the organisation."

Well, does that work out a bit?

"Yes, I think so. In any case, I hear that many colleagues are happy that Ballast Nedam Materieel has an HR adviser again to whom they can easily turn. It's nice to see that a human approach has a lot of effect, for instance in cases of frequent absenteeism. If you don't immediately start pointing the finger, but first ask what is going on, it often brings greater results. The other day, a colleague said he really felt heard and seen. I thought that was a great compliment."

How are you challenged in your work?

"In all sorts of ways. I have a lot of freedom and can do all sorts of things. For instance, I have relaunched the newsletter, I keep track of social media and I started a coaching programme in the management team about leadership and how we treat each other. Yes, I enjoy going to work every day. You can write down that this is my dream job."
