Constructor Luuk: 'I love the dynamics on the construction site'
Luuk has been a structural engineer at Ballast Nedam Infra Projects since August 2021 and has recently specialised in concrete technology. He explains how he ended up at Ballast Nedam and what exactly his job entails.
Why did you choose Ballast Nedam?
"After completing my master's degree in Civil Engineering, I started talking to different companies, including Ballast Nedam. I always thought it was cool that Ballast Nedam carries out such big projects and the head office in Nieuwegein is easy for me to travel to. But perhaps most importantly: I immediately had a good click with the people at Ballast Nedam Infra Projects."

What does your working week look like?
"I'm on the A24 Blankenburg connection project four days a week: one day in the largest construction unit with all the other structural engineers and three days on the construction site itself. On Wednesdays, I work at the head office in Nieuwegein. By working in different places, I learn to look at the challenges I work on from multiple perspectives. I find that very valuable."
So what do you do as a structural engineer?
"Structurally, I am the first point of contact for the Maas Delta Tunnel North, one of the immersed tunnel ramps. For example, if one of the work planners has a new phasing plan or a question about the design, I review such a plan or question. Or if, for instance, during construction a reinforcement beam is not located as shown on the drawing, I check whether measures are needed. I also consult with executives if they encounter problems and regularly make a tour of the building site."
How many structural engineers are working on this project?
"There are about ten of us, including the chief structural engineer and the design manager. We can always turn to them. This is nice, because making constructive choices for such a large project is quite a responsibility. At the same time, that is also what makes it so rewarding and challenging."
Is your job what you imagined beforehand?
"No, it's much more fun! Working on such a big project is very dynamic and varied. Every day we face new challenges. I really enjoy coming up with good solutions together with the work planners and the site managers. I also like the fact that I can continue to develop myself. Last year, I took a concrete technology course and a Python course. Yes, I'm having a great time at Ballast Nedam Infra Projects!"
